Welcome back to The Outspoken Artist. I’m Jean Carlo Penaloza, and today I’m thrilled to share my conversation with Hiram Trillo, the Head Geek at Geekoto. We connected at Imaging USA 2024, where Hiram shared incredible insights about his journey in photography, his venture into leather crafting, and the exciting innovations happening at Geekoto.

Meet Hiram Trillo

Hiram is not just a talented photographer but also a passionate craftsman. He has been in the industry for many years, transitioning from fashion photography to weddings. His experience has shaped his understanding of what photographers need, which is exactly what he brings to Geekoto.

“We’re a relatively young company, about five years old, but we’ve been manufacturing for well over 30 years,” Hiram explained. Geekoto aims to provide quality gear while ensuring representation in the U.S. market.

Innovations at Geekoto

Hiram shared some exciting developments at Geekoto, including their new gaming line. “We’re branching out into lighting and equipment for content creators, podcasters, and gamers,” he said. From mic stands to innovative lighting solutions, Geekoto is committed to creating gear that stands out.

When asked about upcoming products, Hiram mentioned, “We’re working on mic stands and other gear that truly enhances the creative process.” It’s clear that their focus is on making products better than what’s currently available in the market.

From Photographer to Craftsman

What’s fascinating about Hiram is his venture into leather crafting. “I come from a Mexican family where we used every part of the animal,” he shared. This background led him to create his own belts and eventually expand into wallets and camera gear.

“I needed a belt that fit my style for weddings, so I made one,” he said, laughing. “Then I realized I had a lot of hide left, and I didn’t want to waste it.” This led to the creation of Trillo and Sons, a leather company that honors his family’s legacy while providing high-quality, handcrafted products.

Lessons from the Expo

Hiram discussed the challenges of participating in expos like Imaging USA. “Planning requires patience and budgeting,” he emphasized. “You have to be selective about which shows you attend.” His experience highlights the importance of networking and building relationships in the industry.

“When you’re in this industry, get to know the people. Make great connections,” he advised. This networking has proven invaluable for Hiram and Geekoto, especially considering the challenges faced during the pandemic.

A Community of Collaboration

One of the most refreshing aspects of Hiram’s experience at the expo is the sense of community. “I don’t feel competition here; everyone is supportive and collaborative,” he noted. This environment fosters creativity and innovation, making it a welcoming space for artists and vendors alike.

Words of Wisdom

As our conversation wrapped up, Hiram shared a quote that resonates deeply with him: “Aspire to inspire before you expire.” This mantra encapsulates his belief in the importance of uplifting others and contributing positively to the community.
