Getting to Know Sunni
Sunni, how are you doing today?
“Very good, and you?”
I’m doing great! It’s currently 7 PM here in Florida, and what time is it for you over there?
“It’s Saturday, around 10 AM.”
Sunni’s Musical Journey
Let’s dive into your musical journey. When did you first pick up the handpan, and how did that happen?
“It’s been about 20 months now. My journey started when my family was walking at the beach and we stumbled upon a local music shop. I saw a handpan and was intrigued. I had never seen one before, except for a video my dad showed me. When I tapped it, I somehow just knew how to play it, and my parents had goosebumps!”
That’s incredible! So, did you have any formal lessons after that?
“Yes! My parents asked the shopkeeper if there was a teacher, and luckily, someone was coming down that very night. After my first lesson, I got my first handpan for my 10th birthday.”
The Creative Process
What is your process for composing music? Do you plan ahead or just let it happen in the moment?
“It just happens in the moment. I play my handpan, and when I come up with a new pattern, I check if I have enough patterns that fit together to form a piece of music.”
Can you tell us about one of your favorite songs, “Tunnels”? How did that come to be?
“We hadn’t posted in a few days, so we decided to go to a tunnel that was recommended to us. I came up with a new groove that felt perfect for the setting, and I composed it right there.”
The Power of Social Media
It’s fascinating how social media has helped you gain recognition. How has that affected your journey?
“My little motto is to bring positivity and make people smile. Social media has allowed me to reach more people, and I’ve realized I can make a future out of my music.”
What do you see in the future for your music?
“I want to travel the world, play at concerts and festivals, and share my music with as many people as possible.”
Advice for Aspiring Musicians
For anyone looking to start playing the handpan, what tips do you have for them?
“I recommend starting with touch. It’s essential to learn how to get a clear sound before figuring out grooves. Once you have that down, I suggest starting slow and then elaborating.”
What are some challenges that new players might face?
“Many struggle with getting a nice clean sound. They want to play fast right away, but it’s better to start slow and build up from there.”
Future Plans
What’s next for you in your musical journey?
“I’m aiming to travel and share my music while working on my next album, which is set to release in 2024.”
